AND Records is a
Southampton Independent record company that was spawned from a meeting between
Simon Guillan (Designer Technology), Steve Willis (Nostalgictv) & Martin
Perry [publishing guru – Ed].
Simon has run (Designer
Technology) an I.T company for X years after spending 15 years at I.B.M, he had
been servicing and maintaining Martins website and had been advertising in AND
Magazine. Steve had started NostalgicTV a DVD company that had produced the
Classic 1976 FA Cup Final DVD. Simon introduced Steve to Martin based on Steve
doing some ads in the magazine and Martin wanting to write about a DVD that was
about an event very close to his and fellow Sotonians hearts.
It was at this meeting
that Steve and Martins backgrounds in the music business came to the fore
whereupon Martin produced a demo CD of Dlugokecki and played it to Steve.
From that meeting an
idea about forming a record company first materialised.
Martin had played in
various bands over the years including successful local band ‘I’m Ted Bovis’.
He’d had negotiations with various record companies in his time and had first
hand experience of everything that can be bad about record companies. Steve had
worked for EMI, A&M, Island Records as well top indie distributor 3MV,
where he had worked with Oasis, Stereophonics, Muse, Garbage, Suede, Fat Boy
Slim, Ash, Faithless and Dido. 20 years in the record industry had given him a
good grounding.
The record company was
going to need people with certain skills to make it run successfully. On his
mission of fusing talented people of Southampton from whatever walk of life,
Martin had run into two characters who had worked together for a number of
years convincing the people of the town to buy various mixes of Aphex Twin and anything
off of Ninjatune, Andy Silcock and Steve
Judd worked together at Tower Records before decamping to set up their own
promotions company working with bands from the Brit-pop heyday such as
Bluetones and Shed Seven. Before moving
into Management with Off The Wharf (Artful Dodgers Company) They have a good
working relationship with Ben, that stretches back further as a friendship and
the 3 go way back!!
Two other pieces of
the AND Records jigsaw were filled by lawyer, Dave Walker (Gridlaw) and
Accountant, Mark Nygate. Dave and Mark will be key to the functioning of AND
Records. Dave had been in consultation with Dlugokecki’s lawyers regarding the
contract. Three hours before the signing took place at Fopp, the deal was on
the verge of collapse. But by 5:15pm, 45 minutes before the show was due to
start, Dave appeared out of the smoke clutching a deal that was ready for Ben
to sign.
Mark is the company
accountant and royalties specialist. Mark ‘the cat’ Nygate is a former roadie
for Hawkwind, there’s nothing Mark hasn’t seen in the record industry that
couldn’t make your hair curl

Music Publishing is a multi-billion pound, global industry specialising in the ownership, promotion and administration of tracks.
Mechanical royalties: Record companies pay a fee for the right to reproduce work when tracks are licensed and sold. Put simply, if AND RECORDS were to offer your track to Robbie Williams and his record company wanted to record and release it, they would pay a fee. Further royalty payments would be paid from the sale of Robbie Williams' recording of your track -
Performance royalties: Performing rights societies collect royalties on behalf of the copyright owners whenever the tracks are performed, whether live, on TV and radio, or when played in clubs, bars, hotels and shops. So if you're in a cab on the way home from a gig and you hear your track on the radio -
Synchronization fees: Music publishers license music for use in film, TV, advertising and multimedia. In return they collect 'synch' fees. This means that if your track is used in any audiovisual production you will receive a royalty payment for the use of your track.
If AND RECORDS feel we can commercially exploit your track by providing you with media exposure we may offer you a publishing deal.
At AND RECORDS our proactive music publishing team are committed to commercially exploiting your track to its full, global potential. We are committed to making sure that your track is in the right place, at the right time.
If you like what you've heard and you believe in your material then, submit your demo through our music library... follow the instructions at the bottom of the page.
